The Great South Road - Self-guided Tour
Not long after the European settlement of Sydney Cove in 1788, exploration of the interior commenced. By 1805, the Cowpastures (Camden) area was settled and a road to Stonequarry (Picton) was contemplated. Until Mitchell's Great South Road was completed in 1843, a number of roads were in use between Mittagong and Goulburn NSW - as shown on the map in this self-guided tour available to download (below).
The self-guided tour starts at Black Bob's Creek Bridge, takes in the historic township of Marulan (adjacent the Hume Highway, east of Goulburn) and describes the contribution of Australia's road making pioneers Lachlan Macquarie, William Roberts, Hamilton Hume, William Hovell and Sir Thomas Livinstone Mitchell.
This brochure was originally published by the Road and Traffic Authority (RTA) but is now out of print.
