St Saviour's Cathedral
The splendid bell-tower, soaring windows and massive stone work are the first impressions one has of St Saviour's. Named after the Saviour himself, Jesus Christ, the Cathedral dominates Bourke Street and the streetscape of Montague Street.
Royal Letters Patent issued by Queen Victoria on 14 March 1863 established the Diocese of Goulburn giving Goulburn city status and making it Australia's first inland city.
Built around the old St Saviour's Church from 1874 to 1884, St Saviour's Cathedral is one of the finest white sandstone cathedrals in the Southern Hemisphere. Both the Cathedral and Hall were designed by one of Australia's most famous architects, Edmund T. Blacket. The tower was built and bells installed as per the original design in 1988 as a bicentennial project. In 2006 the final three bells were installed, giving Goulburn the only 12 bell and flat 6th country peal in the Southern Hemisphere.
The Forster and Andrews organ contained 43 stops and 2252 pipes when
installed but has been modified several times since. It is regarded as one
of the best pipe organs in Australia and one of the most sought after by
organists who wish to play it.
St Saviour's Cathedral expresses the grace, care and forethought of a
great architect at the height of his powers. It gains the effect of
spaciousness without being very big, and of splendour without being
over-ornate.
Volunteer guides/minders are in attendance between 10am and 4pm. Guided tours for groups and coaches are available by contacting the Cathedral office.
Bell Tower Tours are held at 10am, 11.30am & 2.30pm on the 1st Saturday of each month. Groups by prior appointment. Entry by donation.
