Goulburn Club
In the early 1870s a few friends in Goulburn were in the habit of meeting at one another's homes to play whist. It was thought that a central meeting place would be better and the idea of a club was mooted. On the 1st of February 1877 a meeting was held at which it was decided to form the Goulburn Club. The first premises occupied by the club were rooms rented from the proprietor of the Commercial Hotel, later know as the Hotel Goulburn. Around 1883 the club moved to its present premises in Market Street were it has remained ever since.
In the early years you were required to pay a membership fee and an entrance fee. There were different membership fees for country members, town members, junior members and clerks in the Holy Orders (they paid the cheapest fees). - Excerpt taken from the Goulburn & District Historical Society Bulletin No. 118, 1977.
Today the Goulburn Club is a brilliant venue with open fires, live music and comfortable lounges. A great selection of wines and beers and a spacious verandah overlooking Belmore Park.
The Club hosts several social groups including the Miles Franklin Writers Group and the Goulburn Heritage Group. It also has regular art exhibitions, fun themed nights/events and is available for hire for functions. There are no poker machines or giant plasma screens - just loads of ambience and plenty of good company.
Open Thursday to Saturday 5pm til late.
The Goulburn Club is part of the Merino Country food, wine & culture trail.
