Ex-convict John Wilson first laid European eyes on the Goulburn Downs in
1798, but it would be another 20 years before explorer Hamilton Hume
discovered Lake Bathurst in 1818.
Governor Macquarie explored the country in 1820 and declared it the
Goulburn Plains, in honour of Henry Goulburn, the Secretary of State for
War and Colonies of the time.
We, (my wife & I), were impressed by the hospitality extended to us by
the co-ordinators of the Jazz Convention, the taxi drivers, club staff and
management at the venues & the people of Goulburn. We thank you for a
wonderful Christmas and New Year.

Caroline Chisholm Mosaic
As part of the restoration of the Sts Peter and
Paul's Old Cathedral, itself a building of national heritage
significance, the parish of Goulburn has honoured
Caroline
Chisholm through the creation of a magnificent public artwork. An
exquisite mosaic depicting her contribution to Australia.
The mosaic has been created by internationally renowned mosaic artist,
Nola Diamantopoulos as an enduring memory of Caroline Chilsholm and her
contribution to our nation.
Caroline Chisholm features as one of our most prominent pioneering women.
When she arrived in Australia and witnessed the living conditions of the
women and children of the early colony, she was determined to improve their
situation.
A long and enduring relationship with the people of southern New South
Wales was forged as she travelled through
Goulburn, raising money
and escorting young immigrant girls to their workplaces as domestic
servants to many country farms.
